Many people attempt to set up a successful saltwater aquarium only to be let down by dying fish, algae growth and ultimate failure. These people often leave the hobby frustrated and tell everyone how hard saltwater tanks are. Most of these failures could have been avoided if they knew a few critical pieces of advice that are listed below.

What Is Needed For a Successful Saltwater Aquarium

The Right Size Tank- Many people often buy tanks that are much to small for the beginner to successfully maintain. These are often all in one tanks that are 20 gallons or under and they are becoming more and more popular. In order to have the best chance at a thriving saltwater tank beginners should try and stay in the 40-90 gallon range. This will give them a good stable tank and enough room to house a variety of fish.

Proper Equipment- Many failed saltwater systems were setup like a freshwater tank. This is a sure way to failure as most freshwater methods do not work as well in saltwater systems, especially reef systems. The biggest mistake that is popular in freshwater tanks and will not work well in saltwater system is an under gravel filter. Under gravel filters will lead to high nitrates and algae down the road when used in saltwater systems.

Stop Impulse Buying- This is the number one cause of failed saltwater tanks. People who rushed to set up their systems will run down to the fish store and buy whatever fish catches their eye. These fish will often perish from territorial fighting, disease or the inability to be kept in captivity. Because marine animals are very complex you should do some research on the fish you want to buy for your tank. A few minutes spent online or reading a book can save you alot of money in lost livestock.
