Visitors: 246

One of the first things that many pet owners want to know is how to train a dog to like new people. Often, when dogs are puppies they are not socially trained, or they may be socialized as puppies but not as adults. This can lead to a pet that is aggressive or fearful towards people they do not know. Follow these guidelines to teach your dog how to be friendly and like new people.

Practice Makes Perfect

You can't expect to train a dog to like new people, if you never give them any opportunities to meet anyone. There are parks located all over the world that have incorporated special pet play areas. Try taking your dog to these parks in order to socialize with not only other people but dogs as well. If your pet is scared or aggressive at first, keep them on a leash the first few times you are inside the pen. Once they are comfortable, you can let them run around and socialize.

Invite friends over to your home in order to give your dog someone to practice on. Keep your dog enclosed within a crate or a room of your home, and let them hear the people's voices. Once your pet is calm, let them out to investigate at their own pace. The idea is to give your dog plenty of opportunities to socialize while allowing them to take things slow.

Offer Treats and Rewards

To train a dog to like new people, you have to make it an enjoyable experience. For instance, if you invite some friends over, and give them all treats to offer the dog, then he will associate new people with a pleasurable experience. When it is time to go to the park to meet new people and dogs, offer your pet a small treat before entering the enclosure. Each time your pet reacts well to another person, give them lots of praise.

Once your dog has learned how to associate new people with pleasure and praise, they will relax and become more sociable. However, you should never yell at your pet or punish them for not warming up to someone new. You do not want associate anything unpleasant with meeting unknown faces.

When you want to train a dog to like new people, you have to give them plenty of opportunity and praise. When you combine the two strategies listed above, you can have a friendlier and happier pet.
