Understanding HAZWOPER

Visitors: 386

Dealing with hazardous materials and waste is an important aspect in many industries. Because the use of hazardous materials is often required, it is vital that the employees handling the materials receive proper training in handling those materials. They must also know what to do in case of an accident.

The government realized that there was a need for regulation in the late 1970s, when the Environmental Protection Agency created the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The next step in regulating the industry was to ensure the safety of works, which began when OSHA created a set of regulations called the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard, also known as HAZWOPER.

These standards set forth the rules and required training that each hazardous materials worker must receive before they can begin. The original HAZWOPER training was very unspecific, and many felt that areas of the training guide were very vague. As a result, the training guidelines received modifications and details that are more descriptive.

The first aspect of the new training is forty hours of classroom type training. Workers often perform this portion of the training online. The next step of the training teaches employees how to handle the equipment that they will work with on a daily basis. Employees will also have to address clean up operations. This typically involves addressing the proper procedures used to remove hazardous substances at different sites.

Businesses in need of HAZWOPER training should contact National Environmental Trainers, Inc. , a large training firm. Interested parties can learn more by visiting NatlEnvTrainers.
