The first level of Chartered Accountants course is Foundation Exam or Common Proficiency Test (CPT). There is no short-cut to be followed for scoring well in this examination. However, you must have a deep understanding of the CA CPT syllabus to do well. Most of the candidates appearing for CPT find it difficult to score marks in Quantitative Aptitude subject. QA or Quantitative Aptitude paper carries 50 marks as per the old syllabus and 100 marks as per the new syllabus. This paper has been divided into two parts according to the new syllabus, namely, Business Mathematics & Logical Reasoning and Statistics, carrying 60 marks and 40 marks respectively. Now, let us discuss the details of what is needed to be done for scoring well in this mind-boggling subject.
1. ‘Knowledge without practice makes but half an artist'
Quantitative Aptitude is all about practice as it involves mathematical formulas and concepts. The chances of securing exceptional marks in the examination are directly proportional to how much you practice. Candidates must solve mock test papers and previous year papers for a better understanding of the topics. This will make you have a clear-cut picture of the type of questions asked and pattern in which they have been asked.
2. Have a clear understanding of the concepts
One must have a clear picture in their minds regarding the concepts for solving questions of mathematics and statistics. Apart from the concepts one more important thing to excel at is formulas. Whether mathematics or statistics, the formula is the key for opening locks of equations or word problems. The best way is to note down formulas in a book and revise it on a daily basis for getting a grip on this weak point where most fail.
3. Shortlist the mark-fetching topics
Candidates are advised to study all topics and concepts thoroughly because one must have in-depth knowledge in the long run. However, this does not mean that you cannot shortlist the scoring topics out of the whole CA CPT syllabus. According to experts the shortlisted topics that have high chances of raising your scores are Differential & Integral Calculus, Measures of Central Tendency & Dispersion, Correlation & Regression, Permutation & Combination, Probability, Mathematics of Finance, Ratio & Proportion, etc.
4. Use reliable study materials
Preparing for an examination does not mean studying anything, one must have a reliable study material for that purpose. While preparing for CPT exam candidates must make sure that they have authentic study material verified from the ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India). Authentic and verified study materials will be beneficial because it minimises the risk and enables you to prepare in the right direction.
5. Attempt those questions you are really sure about
Guesswork increases the possibility of losing marks since negative marking is applicable. If you are not sure about a particular question, then it is better to avoid it and move to next question. The time duration of examination is limited and if much time is wasted on one question then the students will not be able to attempt other questions.
6. Manage your time properly
Do not waste time on questions which you find difficult and are time-consuming, rather utilise that time in solving questions which you find easy. Manage your time in such a way that you get time to cross check the questions you have answered. Cross checking helps in reviewing and evaluating your answer thus increasing your chances of securing marks.
Follow these simple points and excel in the subject which gives you cold feet. Conquer the world by making efforts and working hard. Good Luck!
