Visitors: 371

Few industries in Costa Rica are as lucrative or as attractive as the fishing tourism industry, according to recent studies, and the popularity of sport fishing in this attractive tropical region continues to grow.

Statistics generated in a 2009 study of the Costa Rican fishing tourism industry indicate that over 283,000 anglers visited the country this past year, spending millions on necessities such as hotels and restaurants, traveling throughout the country, and of course, fishing guides. The amount generated totaled $599 million. This made up about 2% of Costa Rica’s GDP.

Economically, this revenue is undeniably beneficial to the people of Costa Rica. The money spent by fishermen tourist on these services trickles down through the economic network and put into communities all over Costa Rica.

The immense revenue generated by the fishing tourism industry in Costa Rica is due to the popularity of the game fish within the region. Many species of fish found in the warm tropical waters off of Costa Rica become increasingly rare further off the coast. And with such a wide variety of game fish to catch, such as blue marlin, sailfish, and wahoo, among many others, it's easy to understand why fishing in this region is so popular among foreign anglers. And popularity is on the rise, with Costa Rica seeing an 11% growth in popularity among tourists within the first quarter of 2010. 636,434 foreign visitors brought about the increase, and the they have not slowed down.

While sport fishing in Costa Rica is very popular among foreign anglers today than it has been in years past, the industry is continuously growing. With the growth in revenues and popularity, the fishing in Costa Rica will continue to adapt and grow. More modern fishing vessels and equipment can be found as well as more English-speaking fishing guides, which has been a problem for foreign fishermen in the past.

The Costa Rican fishing tourism industry is extremely beneficial to the economy of this tropical country, and will continue to grow for generations to come. So come experience Costa Rica’s best kept secret and fish the blue waters off the coast where one can find some of the best sports fishing in the world!
