“No one is trying to fill my mother's shoes” said Prince William before marrying Kate Middleton, who wears the engagement ring that once belonged to Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, the ‘People’s Princess.
It does seem as if it is like comparing an orange and an apple, as Princess Catherine is in fact far different from Princess Diana.
Diana’s family was from the aristocracy, being a descendant of both King Charles II and King James II of England, Kate Middleton is a commoner.
At twenty nine years old Kate is believed to be far better fitted for life as a member of the royal family, than was Diana. Kate has been thoroughly groomed during the past eight years, whereas Diana, at just 20 years old, had a mere 6 months to be tutoured, before she walked down the aisle with Prince Charles.
Only 5 months separate Catherine and William, 28, while Diana was 12 years younger than Charles.
Kate achieved a degree in art from a top university. Diana not only failed to finish her studies, but worked for only a few months in a nursery.
Being raised in a broken family, Diana’s parents divorced while she was still very young. On the other hand Kate says her families are a major support to her.
Diana began public life as a shy withdrawn young lady, but rapidly developed a star quality that remains unmatched. Not only was she beautiful, intelligent, charming, charismatic and stubborn, she became universally loved, in spite of the explosive affairs that saw the devastating split between Charles and Diana.
Diana surpassed all the other royals, long after her divorce to Charles, much to the annoyance of the Royal Family, otherwise known as ‘The Firm’.
In the face of a massive outpouring of public grief, Queen Elizabeth came under heavy criticism when the royal family illustrated a lack of response at the estranged princesses’ death. Just before the funeral the Queen made a history making speech regarding Princess Diana.
In 2004 Queen Elizabeth officially unveiled the Diane, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in the south-west corner of Hyde Park in London.
After his mother’s death, Prince William showed anger over the ‘prison of hereditary tradition’. Only time will tell if Prince William and his bride Kate will be capable of doing things differently.
