There aren’t many solicitors in the UK that can say they have a 280 year history but Blandy & Blandy Solicitors from Berkshire most definitely can. Founded in 1733 by rookie attorney Richard Simeon, the firm has gone from strength to strength since, being announced in 2007 as one of the top 200 legal practices in the UK.
For the first 50 years of the firm’s existence, founder Richard Simeon worked alone but in 1783 he was joined by partner John Blandy. Then, in 1795, Mr William Andrews joined and the firm became officially known as Blandy & Andrews.
The Blandy family was intimately associated with the solicitor firm right up until the start of this century, adding over 200 years of value to the company name. Among the most proficient of the Blandy partners was undoubtedly John Jackson Blandy who joined the growing company in 1816. He can only be described as one of the world’s greatest multi-taskers, holding the offices of town clerk, clerk of the municipal charities, and clerk to the magistrates, borough coroner and under-sheriff while still finding time to work at the practice. His skill and aptitude has been passed on through the generations and instilled into the current staff of Blandy & Blandy.
The expanding firm worked hard throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries to become one of the most respected legal practices in the Thames Valley area however disaster struck in 1943 when a stray German bomb hit the main office in Reading. One clerk died and the building was completely destroyed but even this didn’t stop the Blandy & Blandy name from continuing.
In 2008 the company updated its corporate identity to bring it into the 21st century and at the same time launched a new modern website. Today Blandy & Blandy Solicitors from Berkshire employ more than 100 people at their main office in Reading but the company still proclaim to be growing.
Recently several legal directories rated 8 of the firm’s 17 partners as being national leaders in their specialist fields. They also rated 11 of the firm’s practice areas very highly and gave the number one spot to Blandy & Blandy in the areas of family law; wills, trusts and probate; and planning and licencing. The firm now has business and private clients with nine specialist departments ready to cater for anyone who needs their assistance.
When asked why Blandy & Blandy remained so successful 280 years after its inception, senior partner Richard Griffiths put it all down to their ability to ‘trade on integrity’. They pride themselves on being one of the most respected companies in the Thames Valley area and do whatever they can to respect the needs and wishes of every single client that comes through their doors.
From a humble start nearly 300 years ago, this solicitor firm has grown and developed to be one of the top legal practices in the UK, but not once have they forgotten the family values that made them what they are today
