What is a Proxy site? A proxy site allows people to access sites that are normally blocked by school or work filters. These are used most by high school and middle school students on school computers. These sites are very easy to run and do not require any real upkeep which is why they are popular among web developers. A proxy site typically brings in anywhere from 10 cents to 50 dollars a day, the more users you bring to the site, the more you earn.
The first thing you will need to do is to get a Google AdSense account if you do not already have one. You can sign up for an account at . google.com/adsense/ . This is what brings in the revenue from your proxy site will come from.
After you signed up for your account, you will need to get a domain name for your website. This is the url people will type in to access your site. You can get a free co. cc domain at http://co. cc , or for about $7 a year you can get a .com one from a site like godaddy.
You will need a web host, and this is where the only required expense is. A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the internet. A Google search for proxy hosting will bring up many results. I found that strikedata.com had the cheapest proxy hosting at only $3 a month. After you buy a hosting account, find out what the host's “nameservers" are called. You can typically find these in an email that the hosting services typically send to you when you first sign up. After you find the nameservers, log into the website you registered your domain name. Unlock your domain, and then update the nameservers to the ones provided by your host. You now have your hosting set up and will need one more thing.
The last thing you will need in setting up a proxy site will be a template. You can find a couple free templates with a quick Google search.
Or have a custom one made for you for about $10-$15 on a messageboard like the digitalpoint forums. The template file you downloaded will need to be extracted, so if haven't already done so, download a program like winrar or winzip so that you can extract them. You should be left with a folder with a couple of files and another folder containing images within it.
You will now need to sign into your hosting account and locate your file server. Once you find this, you will then need to find a folder titled “public_html". Access that folder, and then copy all the files and folders in your proxy template folder onto there. Next thing you need to do is edit the config file under the “public_html" folder and replace the publisher id, or pub-id with the one provided by Google earlier when you signed up for an AdSense account and save the changes. As you can see, you can edit the text and images on your page by editing the different files within the “public_html" folder. Your website is now all set up! Time to drive traffic to your site!
Marketing a proxy site is most commonly done using only 3 methods, which are Proxy Directories, Proxy Topsites, and Yahoo Groups.
A proxy directory is simply a big index of proxy web pages. Many directories require you to have a link back to their site on your page in order for your page to be featured on their directory before you submit your site to them. If you want your page to look clean and uncluttered as possible, I would not suggest submitting to a proxy directory that requires a link back to their site on your proxy page. In my experience, this marketing strategy has brought in the most visitors to my sites.
Proxy top-sites are similar to directories in the sense that they are also a big index of proxy pages, though you are ranked and can move up or down the ladder depending on how well your site performs traffic-wise. Most of these require you to display a small button on your page advertising the ranking site. Like proxy directories, these work pretty well at bringing traffic in.
Yahoo and Google groups can help boost your traffic if you market your sites within the right groups. Your message that you post within these groups gets emailed to all the group members, and displayed on the group message board. Please take note that there are TONS of messages posted on proxy groups daily, and that unless you spend hours every day posting on them, you will probably not get too much out of posting your site on the groups.
Other methods that people have used to promote their proxies are Yahoo Answers, commenting on Youtube videos, and just sending out mass emails promoting their webpage. These methods tend not to do much traffic-wise unless you were to spend a TON of time promoting your sites using these. Also, many times, these techniques do not reach the targeted demographic that you want.
Now that you have the site built and resources ready, you should be all set to earn your revenue through your webpage that you had just built. Congratulations!
