Does Size Matter In Custom Web Design?

David Rutstein

Visitors: 100

Yes, size does matter in custom web design. But it's not the size that you might be thinking. We're talking here about audience size. That is, if it is important to determine the size of your potential audience when you're building a web site.

There are around one billion users in the Internet today. If you're planning on building a website, YES, it is very important to determine how many of these users you will be able to capture as regular visitors. Why? For three good reasons:

* Determining back-end requirements

* Estimating Costs

* Estimating Revenue

Determining back-end requirements

A website is not just a series of pages. It is actually a fully operational system that is complete with a back-end system composed of bandwidth allocation, storage space and programming scripts. As your website increases in traffic, it will require more and more bandwidth, which is the amount data that is sent over a network connection at a given time period. The unit of bandwidth is bits per second.

When your website exceeds its bandwidth allocation (typically per month), your website will not anymore be accessible to visitors. What you can do is to negotiate with your hosting company to lift the cap on the bandwidth and adjust your payment.

But bandwidth is not the only back-end factor, there are more back end things to consider when creating a custom web design

Estimating website costs

Determining your audience size give you an idea on how expensive your website will be. In general, the more popular your website, the more expensive the maintenance costs, especially if you're selling a product and taking orders from the website.

Estimating Revenue

If you own a typical website, then you have a website that needs to earn so it can pay for its own costs and hopefully make you rich. Don't believe all that you hear about how much you can earn from the Internet. To earn that much money, you will need to attract as many visitors. Why? Because the average conversion rate among website visitors is less than 5%. This means that, on the average, less than 5% of website visitors actually click and buy products from a website.
