However, overuse of keywords or using too many can damage your website's rankings. This practice is often referred to as keyword stuffing, and should be avoided.

The proper keyword usage rate for a website is referred to as keyword density. This is the amount of times that a keyword appears in the text, in relation to the rest of the words. An ideal keyword density for most sites is 1 to 3%. The main keyword phrase used in any article for SEO purposes should not appear in the text more than once every 100 to 125 words. If when you re-read the piece, the keyphrase seems to repeat unnaturally then you have certainly overdone it.

One thing that site owners should also avoid is using duplicate content. This happens when some or all of the text is copied from another website or the same copy used across many pages of a site. Not only does this harm a website's rankings, but it also violates the intellectual property rights of others. Another problem associated with duplicated content is that sites that use it can appear less credible to visitors. Unique content that truly reflects your site will carry more weight with site visitors.

Link fishing!
Quality content serves as a type of link bait. When customers visit unique content in the form of articles or blog posts, they are more likely to explore the rest of what the site has to offer. Many of the most popular sites use blogs to provide customers with regular updates. These blogs often provide backlinks to new products or services that are offered. Another way to encourage repeat visits is to offer a forum. Customers will appreciate being able to interact with each other, and you can more easily address any concerns.
