What Are Site Maps?

Visitors: 127

A sitemap is like the contents page of an e-book, which enlists all the different topics on different pages and you can simply click on the hyperlinked text of the list and navigate to any page of your choice and interest. Technically, a sitemap is defined as - A page which contains a well-structured and organized listing of links to all other pages within the website, which facilitates easier spidering and indexing of all the individual web pages.

If a particular website is small enough, comprising of just a couple of web pages, then it is possible to link all the pages available on your website on a single page, known as the site map. However, if a particular website is very large, comprising of several hundreds of web pages, then it can easily get anyone lost in the midst of their website, including the search engines. Therefore, for easier navigation between the different web pages on such a large site, and to promote easy spidering and indexing of all the web pages, such large websites must definitely provide their websites with site maps.

Normally, there are two types of sitemaps - one for the users and one exclusively for the search engines. The sitemap meant for users is usually provided in HTML format (listing the pages of your site), while the XML Sitemap is the second type of sitemap that is meant exclusively for the search engines. It provides information about your site to the search engines in a unique language that can only be understood by the search engines and that is relevant only to the web crawlers. However, providing sitemaps in these 2 different types - HTML and XML - will not be treated as duplicate content, nor will your site ever be penalized for submitting HTML and XML Sitemaps.

You will not need to go into the intricacies of Sitemaps, just understanding that sitemaps are very crucial for search engine optimization is enough.
