Secondary keywords or modifiers provide a decreased volume of searches but gain advantage through lesser competition for keywords. Working from the example above, ‘Chinese Restaurants in New York’ would be considered a modifier. While many Internet users are searching for ‘Restaurants in New York’ there are tens of thousands of other restaurants. As such levels of competition are the case with may primary phrases, secondary keywords should not be ignored for their potential volume.

In summary, suitable keywords receive an adequate amount of searches in major or niche search engines. Unique keywords are relevant to your site's content and the competitors do not heavily use them. By selecting multiple keywords for each page of your site, if the content is different, this is most beneficial. Examine the result yourself.
