I am sure you would have heard it said many times that, ‘The money is in the list. ’ This phrase is true, however we want to talk about some basic steps to actually build a list. At the end of the day you can only get the money in the list if you actually have a list.

Here are 4 simple steps to build your opt in list.

Step 1. Set up a squeeze page.
This is a simple webpage designed with one aim in mind - to capture the details of your visitor. You focus the visitors mind - They either enter their details to get your give away product or leave your site.

If you are an affiliate marketer, you simply must send traffic to your squeeze page, pre-sell your subscriber before sending them to your affiliate website. This way, you can maximise traffic to your site and build a long rewarding relationship with your subscriber. Think of the money you will save on advertising. It is easier to sell to an existing customer than to a stranger.

Step 2. Offer something of value for free.
Your give away product must be something your target audience considers a ‘must have. ’ State clearly the benefits not features. You must answer the question ‘what's in it for me?’ You will be judged by your free product, so it must be of good quality. Popular free incentives include mini courses, newsletters, memberships, ebooks, software and so on. Do not be afraid to offer great value for free. If you save the best for last, you may miss the opportunity to show it to your visitor. Don't bank on a second opportunity to make a first impression.

Step 3. Sign up for an autoresponder.
Your autoresponder enables you to follow up your visitors with messages you have written to go out at preset intervals. There are lots of other things your autoresponder can do for you. You can get a good one like Aweber.com for under $20 a month.

Step 4. Send traffic to your squeeze page.
Traffic is the backbone of any online business. Without it, you are reduced to paying monthly fees for the upkeep of your website. It will only be a matter of time before the business folds.

My favourite traffic source is article traffic. This is due to the fact that it qualifies my visitors. You will however need to write a lot of articles to build the right amount of traffic. This takes time but it is well worth it.

You must also understand that whoever reads my articles already has an interest in the subject. They will visit my website squeeze page via my resource box (at the end of my article) to learn more. I am building trust as I go along. By the time they get to my site a relationship would have been formed. I would no longer be considered a stranger. This relationship ensures I get a better response to my requests than if I had sent them first to a website sales page.

The money really is in the list and list building is no longer a mystery.
