Forums are a great place to mingle online and make online friends. If you are working in a home business especially, you will often spend a lot of time alone working on your business. It's only normal to seek out some company online.
By and of themselves, forums are not time killers. But if you let them be, they are. It's easy to waste hours on end each day posting on forums, or reading through the latest thread war (or even being involved in one yourself). I have to say, being involved in a thread war or being flamed is a surefire way to decrease your productivity levels. It sucks your energy and your time. So rule number one - don't get involved in one.
If you're doing any marketing online, always remember this - it's better to be rich than to be right! Let the other person be right, while you quietly go about making your money. I have seen far too many ‘forum gurus’ who are full of hot air. If they were that successful, they wouldn't be wasting that much time on forums while justifying it as ‘relationship building’.
Now, there are a few activities with regards to forums that can be extremely useful. You can use them for ‘advertising’ purposes. Post informative stuff and make a really compelling signature file and you will get a few visitors each day to your site. The cumulative effect over a year will be great - you will see an increase in signups and sales.
The other activity that is useful is for doing research. If you are not sure about something, you can post a question on the forum or use the ‘search’ function to find information about it.
