Setting yourself up as an affiliate is a great way to earn money online. Selling somebody else's products or services means you have relatively low set up costs and overheads, and very little risk. However, there are some common affiliate mistakes that you should be aware of and try to avoid.

1. Spreading yourself too thin

With the huge variety of affiliate programs available online, it is very tempting to join as many as possible to make as much commission as possible. This is not always the best strategy, however. You need to dedicate some time and effort into marketing each affiliate product, and if you join too many schemes you won't have time to promote any of them. Select your products carefully, and concentrate on finding a winning marketing formula.

To be effective as an affiliate you need to get your customers geared up to buy the merchant's product or service. They should be reaching for their credit card even before they follow the link from your site to the merchant. If your customers aren't aware when they click on that link that they will be taken to another site, they may just hit the back button right away.

3. Having too little content

You need to get visitors to your site in order to promote affiliate products. If your site is all marketing and no useful content, your traffic will decrease, and you will have no one to sell to. Make sure your site has a good balance of valuable content to hold the customers’ attention, and advertising for your affiliate products. Some people worry that having a content rich site will prevent affiliate sales as your customers won't want to leave your site. This really isn't the case; your customers will value your opinion if they value your content, and will be more likely to buy a product that you recommend.

4. Not understanding your customers

When you are choosing an affiliate product to promote, it really helps to know a bit about the customers that visit your site. What age group do they belong to? Are they male or female? Are they professionals or stay at home parents? Unless you really know your audience it will be hard to find an affiliate product that they will benefit from.
