When starting out in Internet Marketing, the toughest thing is weeding through the loads of information (try not to be inflicted with paralysis by analysis – information overload). You need the right tools to focus on – the top income-producing activities and learning the basics really well. This article series is dedicated to Newbies all over in hopes of giving them some solid information on the most important resources they need to get started. Let’s get started…
How to Avoid the 3 Most Common Affiliate Mistakes
Affiliate marketing is one of the most effective and powerful ways of earning money online. These programs give everybody a chance to make a profit through the Internet without having inventory and products of your own. You aren’t even required to be very knowledgeable on the products you sell – although a fair amount of knowledge and expertise will help further your efforts. Since these affiliate marketing programs are easy to join, implement and pay a commission on a regular basis, more and more people are now venturing into this business.
However, like all businesses, there are lots of pitfalls in the affiliate marketing business. Committing some of the most common mistakes will cost the marketer a large portion taken from the profit they are making everyday. That is why it is better to avoid them than to be sorry later.
Mistake number 1: Choosing the wrong affiliate product.
Many people want to earn from affiliate marketing as fast as possible. In their rush to be part of one, they tend to choose a bandwagon product. This is the kind of products that the marketer thinks is “hot”. They choose the product that is in demand without actually considering if the product appeals to them. This is not a wise move.
Instead of jumping on the bandwagon, try to choose a product in which you are truly interested in. For any endeavor to succeed, you should take some time to plan and figure out your actions. Your own enthusiasm for the product is the best way to sell it.
Pick a product that appeals to you. Then do some research about that product to see if they are in demand. Promoting a product you are more passionate about is easier than promoting one for the sake of the earnings only.
Mistake number 2: Getting involved in too many affiliate programs.
Since affiliate programs are very easy to join and usually free, you might be tempted to join multiple affiliate programs to try and maximize the earnings you will be getting. In addition, with all the information you are bombarded with every day since you joined the world of internet marketing, every program seem like it’s the greatest and why aren’t you selling it? Besides it is also easy to think that there is nothing wrong and nothing to lose by being part of many affiliate programs.
True, it is a great way to have multiple sources of income. However, joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time will prevent you from concentrating on each one of them and promoting any individual one to your best capacity. Nothing gets 100% and many get much, much less.
The result? The maximum potential of your affiliate program is not realized and the income generated will not be what you were hoping it would be. The best way to get excellent results is by joining just one program that pays at least a 40% commission (many pay even much better – there are lots to choose from – even 75% or more programs). Then give it your best effort by promoting your product enthusiastically. As soon as you see that it is already making a reasonable profit and you understand what promotional efforts work best for this particular program, then consider joining another affiliate program. Another good program will be there when you’re ready; there is no reason to buy into the idea that you MUST get involved right now or you’ll be missing out on something.
The technique is to do it slowly but surely. There is really no need to rush into things, especially with affiliate marketing. With the way things are going, the future is looking really bright and it seems affiliate marketing will be around for a long time.
Mistake number 3: Failing to buy the product or use the service.
As an affiliate, your main purpose is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service and to find customers. Sometimes you aren’t even required to buy the product to promote it. This is a BIG mistake. You must be able to relay to your customers that a certain product or service is valuable. It is therefore difficult for you to do this when you yourself have not tried things out. Thus, you will fail to promote and recommend them convincingly. You will also fail to create a desire in your customers to buy into any of what you are offering.
Try the product or service personally first before you sign up as an affiliate to see if it is really delivering what it promises. If you have done so, then you are one of the credible and living testaments aware of its advantages and disadvantages. Your customers will then feel the sincerity and truthfulness in your sales efforts and this will trigger them to try it out for themselves.
Many (in fact almost all) affiliate marketers make these mistakes and end up paying dearly for these mistakes. Try to do everything to avoid making the same mistakes – you will certainly save yourself a lot of money, time and frustration.
Time is the key. Take the time to analyze your marketing strategy and check if you are on the right track. If done properly, you will be able to maximize your affiliate marketing programs and earn higher profits.
