Usually when marketing junkies start an online business they already have an idea for their product in mind. This may be because their first contact with an internet marketing enthusiast encouraged them to seek their own niche. They may have never heard of an alternative way to get started so they’ve poured all their energy into finding their own product.

For those who are anxious to get started and not interested in trying to find a niche right away, affiliate marketing is a good alternative. Affiliate marketing allows you to promote someone else’s product in exchange for receiving a percentage of the sale. So if a merchant sells his product for $60.00 and pays 60% to his affiliate sales force, you stand to make $36.00 in commission. Not bad.

By pursuing affiliate marketing you can involve yourself in learning how to build your own website, a valuable internet skill. You obviously will become familiar with ClickBank and Commission Junction, two highly regarded affiliate merchant sites. It will be important to know about list building and its related components necessary to bring traffic to your site. You will learn about squeeze pages. autoresponders, forums, article marketing, ppc (pay per click advertising) ebooks, ezines, ecourses, etc.

This may seem like a lot to absorb, but you’d have to know about these things anyway if you were promoting your own product. Promoting someone else’s product at the beginning can reduce some of the pressure you would otherwise have in producing your own.

Working as an affiliate, before promoting your own product is like getting on the job training. Even if it turns out you do not do well financially, you are getting invaluable knowledge that will put you in a good position should you decide to go with your own product.

One other advantage of affiliate marketing is, it will give you time to delve into other products. By the time you decide to promote your own, you will be more knowledgeable about the kind of products internet marketing visitors are buying.

Trust me, you will learn a lot, no matter how long you have been marketing. Just do it!
