If you’re like me, you are constantly looking for ways to make some extra money. I can remember back in my younger days when I was going out and working 3 to 4 jobs at a time just to make ends meet. I would wake up at 5:30am, go to my main job until 4:00pm, then change clothes and go to one of my part-time jobs until 1 or 2 the following morning. Then I would go home, sleep a few hours and start the whole process again. Does this describe any of you?
The problem is that in this day of information overload, most of us just don’t know where to begin. We see advertisements on every web site we see talking about making money on the internet. We get spammed constantly about money making opportunities. How do we make sense of it all?
Secondly, if you’re like me, I am not a “certified computer geek. ” I don’t have the time or resources to go out and create my own website, nor do I want to buy and store a bunch of “widgets” in my closet, spare bedroom or garage, then process my customers orders and have to pay to ship my product.
We have all heard the phrase “work smarter, not harder, ” but how many of us are actually doing this? Most of us these days have this wonderful tool called the computer. Unlike the human body, the computer does not require sleep, food, water or 15 minute breaks. So why not put this useful machine to work and make some extra money while we are at our daytime jobs, running our kids to soccer practice, or while we are sleeping?
Affiliate marketing could be the solution you are looking for. The basic premise of affiliate marketing is that we are acting as the “middle-man” for a large internet marketing firm or retailer. We basically get people to visit our website, and they in turn purchase the product(s) we are advertising. When the transaction is complete, we split the profits with the company.
The beauty of this type of program is that the companies we represent do most of the work for us. They create our website for us and give us easy step by step instructions on how to get our site up and running, how to get people to our website, and how to maintain our website so that we can make money!
The other advantages include the fact that there is no inventory to keep, no products we have to ship, and no customers to call. The website does 99% of the work for us. We just have to check on things 30 minutes to an hour daily to make sure our website continues to work smoothly.
You have to remember that this process involves starting your own business, so there is usually a small start-up fee involved. The fees vary, depending on which company or companies you wish to represent. The average cost ranges from $30 up to $100. Also, you may have to pay a fee to have someone host your website for you. There are free web hosting sites you can use, but it is better to use the companies that charge a fee, that way you and your customers can view and use all the tools on your website. The company(ies) you choose to represent usually recommend a web-host to use and will often give you a discount if you choose to use them.
For some of us, this may seem like a lot, but if you started up some other type of business, say for example a lawn mowing business, what would your start-up costs be? When you factor in the costs of a mower, the trimmer, blower or brooms, garbage bags, gasoline, etc. , it may cost you hundreds if not thousands to get your business off and running.
I know that this article is not all encompassing. There is just simply no way to get every single detail down. But again, if your looking for a starting point, affiliate marketing is a good way to get your feet wet and make good money along the way. Just remember to have a willingness to learn, to be diligent, and to stay committed.
