Affiliate programs are designed to allow a person (or business) to earn a commission from the sale of another (usually related) product just by placing a link to the company’s affiliate code on their website. If a visitor to the site bearing the link makes a purchase, the affiliate makes the sale, and so does the person promoting that affiliate product, just for referring the buyer to that particular link. You pay the affiliate a fee to place a link on their site, and they in turn send traffic to your site, or vice versa. Therefore, affiliate marketing can be an effortless way to add some extra income to your site. The best news is, setting up an affiliate program is easy!
One of the best ways to do this is through by placing an opt-in page on your site. Via this page, you can gather the name of each visitor to your site, and then you can follow up with them later to recommend your affiliate. Alternatively, you can write a review of your affiliate’s product. Compose a one-page review that reviews their product but that promotes yours at the same time.
Remember, the goal is to get people to buy your product, too! By focusing your visitors’ attention on the information in your review (without presenting other distracting elements like graphics and external links) you will be increasing the likelihood that they will buy the product, which translates into money in your pocket. Another strategy might be to offer the purchaser a discount on the product if they buy it by clicking on your link.
Don’t be too sales-pitchy though! People don’t like to feel like they are being duped, and an overly aggressive approach can seem smarmy. Make sure your review of the product is based in truth – make sure you have actually tried the product before reviewing it. This will add the crucial elements of honesty and believability to your review and you will be seen as a trustworthy source.
