I hate to be a sour puss here, because email marketing is so effective, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind when you are email marketing: basically this is an email marketing warning!
An email marketing campaign can be a successful way to spread the word about your business, but there are a few key things to keep in mind. The goal is to attract the recipients’ attention, not to become a cyber-pest! Email marketing can be an effective way to both notify current customers about sales, promotions and news, as well as attracting new customers to your business.
The first and most important aspect of this kind of marketing is permission. While it may seem like simple common sense, getting the permission of your recipients is critical to fostering a positive relationship with them. Foregoing this step could lead to customers’ feelings of being pestered and invaded, which could lead to a loss of trust in your business and negative word-of-mouth – both of which are disastrous to any business.
Also, keep your customers’ email addresses private. Do not distribute lists of your customers to other business, even if their willing to purchase these lists seems like a good financial decision, it too can result in a loss of trust on the part of the customer. In addition, make sure your customers know that you are committed to keeping their information private. Clearly outline your privacy statement near the top of your email so that there is no doubt as to whether it will be seen. When customers see that you have taken the time to ensure their privacy, they feel more comfortable. Further, this privacy statement holds you more accountable for your customers’ safety.
Treat your email marketing leads confidential and use them only in lawful ways, and this warning has served its purpose!
