Search engine marketing, of course, is the art of creating high search engine rankings out by using both on page and off page optimization techniques to come up more favorably in the search engine rankings than your competing web sites (at least competing for that one keyword).
Some of the ideas that I have covered in articles 101-108 have been the basics of search engine marketing, both off-page and on-page, and the advanced ideas of specifically searching for things in top ten web sites that can be toppled simply by doing each thing a little better than the currently top-ten ranked sites are doing.
But how about an overall strategy?
Here is one I have been using lately with some success.
Go in to a keyword tool and find keywords that have at least 1000 monthly searches ( I find that a #1 spot will get you about 400 visits, if there are 1000 monthly searches), and less than 5000 ‘results’, or what I affectionately (or not so affectionately) call my ‘competition’.
Now go to the search results for that keyword or keyword phrase and use the techniques I discussed in parts 106-108 in this series – check their on page optimization, and crucial elements of their off-page optimization factors, determining if you can break in, and then put that keyword on a separate list, making note of the total monthly search volume and the volume of ‘results’.
Do this until you have gotten to a desired amount of monthly searches – my number was 200,000; I figure that once I am #1 in combined keywords of 200,000 monthly searches, then I will be getting around 80,000 monthly visitors.
