I say “Avoid Eye Candy If You Want Sales!!" What do I mean by this provocative statement? Simply that if you're getting involved in business website building, you need to make some cold hard decisions about what you're trying to achieve, and not be swayed by the “bells and whistles brigade" who will lure you with their eye-candy wares.
Your site may be covered with flash gizmos, but the chances are it won't perform in the sales department! Here are four important business website building tips to take heed of:
Tip #1 Use a strong headline. It's amazing the number of business sites you see that have pretty graphics as their main focus of attention on the home page, and say something like:
"Welcome to Acme Company.com"
Never use this approach! It's a total waste of the valuable virtual real estate that is contained in that small rectangle of your home page! Instead, use a benefit laden headline. Many times what we think are benefits are really only features. To find out which is which, always ask the question “So what?!"
The car you are selling has computer controlled ABS brakes…. SO WHAT? Well, the car pulls up way quicker in an emergency, and could save your life! Now that's a benefit!
There are several formats for effective headlines that have been proven to work over the years. It's often hard to go past the old favorite “How To…. . And ……"
Tip # 2 Be clear about what the purpose of your website actually is. Well respected internet marketer Dr. Ken Evoy calls this the “Most Wanted Response" or MWR. Do you want your visitor to buy something, subscribe to an opt-in email form, click on an ad - what do you want? Think about that and write it down.
Tip # 3 Don't try to do everything at once. Decide on your MWR, and “line all your ducks up in a row" to support that. If you want them to Opt-in, don't cram your page full of flashing banner ads for the visitor to click on - that will just distract them, and you will lose effectiveness from your desired response.
Now here's the fourth tip to consider with your business website. Building a site without attention to this important factor will hurt your sales badly!
Tip # 4 Focus on the “Lifetime Value Of A Customer". This concept, even for those who understand it, flies in the face of that desire in all of us for short term, immediate gain! But the fact is, our overall profits will be multiplied, possibly exponentially, if we take a longer term view.
A classic example is the question of whether to go for a sale straight away, or to collect a first name and email address and market to them consistently over time. You will always get a better response with the latter approach, so you must make sure your approach to your business website building incorporates an automated email follow up system, known as a sequential autoresponder.
