The Importance of Website Traffic

The definition of website traffic is the amount of visitors a website receives, but why is website traffic so important?

Why do I need website traffic

Without website traffic your business cannot succeed, it’s like owning a shop, if the potential customers don’t enter the shop you do not have a chance to sell anything, the more website traffic you get the more chances you have of selling your product.

Knowing how well your product is selling is also important when looking at your website traffic, you can work this out by using the formula below

Website traffic Products sold = Conversion rate

Imagine you have 400 visitors and you sell 35 products then your conversion rate is 11.42%, if you want to sell 350 products then you would need an estimated 4,000 visitors to achieve this target.

How do I get website traffic

One way to generate traffic is submitting your site to major search engines like MSN and Google. Although this does not guarantee traffic, if done correctly it can be the best way to increase the amount of visitors you get, it is also free.

Marketing your site is another method of driving traffic to your site. This can take many forms such as

Banner advertising
Article marketing
Pay per click advertising
Classified adverts

Some of these methods do cost money while others take your own time to achieve, for the amount you spend, whether it be time or money, you can reap the benefits if done correctly.

Is there any negative affects to website traffic

Like everything there can be negative impacts to achieving a huge amount of traffic, although these negatives if foreseen are easily managed.

  • If you gain too much traffic to your site (known as traffic overload) it can slow down the loading time of your site or, in worse case scenarios, prevent access to your site.

  • To much traffic can result in huge amounts of sales, while this sounds great, if you cannot supply the demand this can affect how people view your business and may cause a loss of sales due to negative comments about your service. We now know website traffic is extremely important so I want you to go away from this article with a focused mind so you can start driving traffic to that special website you have built.
