The main duty of an insurance adjustor is to find out what the exact compensation is that should be paid to the policy holders. Most insurance adjusters work in large property-liability insurance companies but there are some that are employed by insurance agencies, banks, etc. Their job is done in the office and on-the-field. They may work in the field of car accidents, property damage, and even for those that have been injured in an accident. The first thing that an insurance adjuster does when a claim has been filed by the policy holder is to visit the claimant to get all of the details. For example, if it was a car accident they will talk to any witnesses, and consult with the police to clear any doubts as to who was at fault. If a claim is filed for injuries the adjuster will examine the medical records to make sure that the injuries are genuine.

If there is property damage it is the adjuster’s job to inspect how much damage there is and what the insurance company will be liable for paying. They will check the claim forms and other policy documents to make sure that there is no attempt at fraud by the claimant. The insurance adjustor may be required to negotiate with the claimants in regards to claim settlement and if necessary take the matter to court. The negotiations need to be fair to the claimants and the company. In order to make sure that the claim is genuine the insurance adjuster may have to get the financial records of the claimant from the bank. The adjuster will have to document all proceedings, investigations, and records for future reference.

To become an insurance adjuster there is no formal education needed but you do have to possess the understanding of how insurance works. The basic requirement is to have a high school diploma or its equivalent. It is advisable that while in high school that you take some business courses, especially if you plan to open your own agency or be a freelance insurance adjuster. You should also have good communication and logical thinking skills. Most states do require that you have a license but the prerequisites for getting a license vary from state to state. When starting your job as an insurance adjuster you will have to work on small assignments under the supervision of an experience, licensed insurance adjuster.

Since there are many different types of insurance adjusters, their exact duties will vary. For example, if you work for a health care company you would be working with health claims but if you work with an insurance company you may be dealing with fire, accidents, theft, and more.
