The surgical procedure prior to using compression stockings for Lipedema is the Manual Lymphatic Drainage. This therapy is done to reduce the excess fluid in the interstitial tissue. The next step in the treatment is the usage of medical grade compression stockings. This is necessary to maintain the circumference of the leg after the surgery.

After MLD, the process of bandaging alone will not have the desired effect of size reduction and fat reduction in the limb. Massaging and wrapping frequently will cause intolerable pressure to the limbs. The key is the application of the right amount of pressure at regular intervals, which is achieved using medical grade compression stockings.

Compression stockings have edema that applies the required pressure to the skin. They also press the lymphatics against the muscles which improves lymphatic pumping. Thus as the muscles move, the compression stockings help in circulating the fluid through the lymphatic system.

Compression stockings for Lipedema treatment are available in a range of different materials, such as,

Circular knit/flat knit:

They are of four way stretch and are made of nylon with compression strength of 8/15m Hg. Flat knit is a two stretch and it has a seam. It is suitable for bigger limbs and abnormally shaped limbs. Flat knit is expensive than circular knit and it is used to treat over hang at the ankle and lobes at thighs and knees.

Short stretch compression stockings:

These types of stockings stretch only about forty percent of the length of the material. It offers a two way compression. It gives low level compression at rest and high levels when you are active. This is very good in treating Lipedema as it steadfastly improves the venous and lymphatic function and it helps in active muscle support to the veins.

Nighttime compression stockings:

Lipedema is a medical condition that not only requires compression during the day, but also during the night. Compression stockings have a four way stretch and there are chances that you may refill during the night when you rest. Special nighttime compression stockings help you balance at night by reducing the swelling. These stockings have a special padding that softens the fibrotic tissue. Some therapists recommend these stockings for daytime as well, depending upon the severity of your condition. These stockings are very effective in maximizing the reduction and maintaining the limb circumference. The padding applies limited pressure without suppressing the flow of blood in the affected areas. Nighttime compression stockings are also manufactured with skin-friendly materials that prevent irritation.

Lipedema is a medical condition with different complications. Choosing the right compression stockings is very important for effective treatment. You can select the right medical grade and compression strength depending upon the severity of the condition. Doctors prescribe it after the surgery to keep the condition under control. Several patients have been successfully treated and were able to maintain the size of their limbs after surgery by using the right compression stockings.
