Finding the best digital camera for you can be difficult, if you don't know exactly what you want, and what's available.

With so many digital cameras available on the market today, finding the best one for your specific needs can be difficult. Today's cameras come packed with special features - and all kinds of technological tricks - and it's easy to be dazzled into buying an all-singing, all-dancing model that doesn't really give you the results you want.

If you're looking for a camera that's great value for money, then a compact camera would be perfect for you. These are relatively cheap, and tend to have robust cases that make them easy to carry around, so they're convenient. Generally, the more you pay for, the more features you will get.

Compact cameras are mostly designed for taking holiday snaps, and pictures of friends and family.

The features you find on this kind of digital camera will tend to reflect this, and will include facilities such as autofocus, automatic face detection and a wide-angle lens. There's not much between models in this category in terms of resolution - so decide which features you want, and take your pick.

Bridge cameras - so called because they bridge the gap between compact cameras and digital SLRs - are the next step up the digital camera ladder. If you enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, and take a lot of landscape or wildlife shots, this type of camera will give you excellent results.

With a bridge camera, you get a great deal more control over your shots, plus an extended zoom capability (in some cases, up to 26x). If you want to do more than just point and shoot - but don't want to have to fork out the extra money for an SLR - then a bridge camera could be the best digital camera for you.

At the top end of the digital camera scale is the digital SLR. This type of camera generally has interchangeable lenses - making them much more versatile - and their sensors are larger, which allows them to capture more light for a cleaner image.

A digital SLR will give you truly professional results, but don't expect to find a video function, as most SLRs don't have one.

As well as the basic camera type you want, there are a number of other factors you should take into consideration before you buy. Resolution is generally not as important as it used to be - anything over 6 megapixels is generally enough - and most cameras now offer this as standard.

For resolutions above 10 megapixels, downloading and processing times will be vastly increased.

One feature that you should always look for is an image stabilizer. All but the very best digital cameras are susceptible to blurring, due to the way in which the image is captured, and a stabilizer helps to minimise this problem - so you can have added confidence as you snap away.

Once you've decided on the type of camera you want, and the features you require - shop around online - to find a specific make and model that fits your needs precisely. Then it's simply a matter of visiting online price comparison sites, to quickly find out where you can get the best deal for your chosen digital camera.

When it comes to finding the best digital camera , there are a number of different factors you should take into account, in order to ensure you're not wasting your money, and that you will get exactly what you need.
