Tips to Help You Avoid the Holiday Party Embarrassment

It happens all too often where the holidays arrive and the company's holiday party is upon you. We get dressed up and ready for the festivities knowing that we will surely have a load of stories to tell in the morning. If you want to avoid being a victim to the holiday horror stories there are some simple rules to follow.

How many holiday functions have you walked away from feeling embarrassed for others and the way they behaved? How many of you walked away from these same functions feeling embarrassed about your own behavior during the event? It is all too common and can be avoided if you act responsibly and know your boundaries.

The number one issue when it comes to holiday parties that are either company related or even family related is alcohol. During this time of year it is always common for people to like to have drinks with friends and family to celebrate the holiday season. Many functions offer alcohol in abundance and it can become all too easy to cut loose and go a little overboard. If you are thinking of participating in a few drinks with your co-workers or family then know your limits. This is not your opportunity to see who can drink the most and make you the laughing joke of the party. This is crucial when it comes to an enjoyable experience or one you will regret forever.

Remember no matter what you think might be funny while you are drunk might not seem very funny to others. Enjoy the party and enjoy the people without over indulging in the bar items.

Drink water between drinks to help keep your body hydrated. Many times people forget to add water when they are drinking alcohol and can become overly drunk and will most likely embarrass themselves.

If you are attending with another person make sure they are aware of your limits and what the expectations are. It can become just as humiliating if you follow the limits and your guest goes over the top. If you have to worry whether or not your guest will cross this line then you need to have the discussion ahead of time.

Do not use this time to strike up a relationship with a co-worker. Although many companies discourage this behavior many people do hook up for what seems like a good night at holiday parties. This will almost always end badly and your safest bet is to just have fun and steer clear of relations with co-workers.

Enjoy yourself and have fun. Steer clear of the gossip and potential issues with other co-workers. Many fights begin and often escalate at company functions where alcohol is involved. If you have any type of strained relationship with a co-worker or co-workers significant other than you will want to have fun and steer clear of any possible issues during the evening.

If you feel you or your guest going overboard make a polite exit. Your best bet in this situation is to call it a night and go home before the embarrassment commences and you are left as part of the horror stories of the evening.

If you keep your calm and your cool during these holiday parties you will come away from it with pride and dignity. This is a special gift you can give yourself that will aid you in holding your head up high. Enjoy the holiday season without the meaningless party issues.
