Staying Busy and Celebrating During Your Fast with Crafts for Yom Kippur

For Jewish people, there is perhaps no more solemn holiday than Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement. This special day, one of the High Holy Days, is typically observed with 25 hours of fasting and intensive prayer. Because fasting can be a difficult thing to do, especially for youths, it may be beneficial to stay busy with crafts that take the mind off hunger during this time.

Because Yom Kippur generally forbids food, drink, oils, perfumes, bathing, and marital relations, there are some crafts that would be appropriate for other celebrations but not for this holy day. However, one craft that could be interesting, especially for youths who are looking forward to the upcoming Hanukkah (Yom Kippur occurs in late September/early October) is to begin creating decorations for the winter holiday. If not wishing to create holiday-specific décor, they can cut out winter decorations, like snowmen and snowflakes to keep their hands busy.

Another craft that may be related to Yom Kippur and would be excellent for older children would be to create a piece of prose or poetry that talks about what the holiday means to them. This can be framed in a homemade frame and decorated so that it can be displayed and admired, as well as used to remind them in the future of the importance of the solemn day.

While Yom Kippur is a very solemn day with some important restrictions, it doesn't have to be a day during which boredom takes over and hunger becomes a tiger attacking the integrity of observers if those celebrating the High Holy Days take part in fun crafts.
