Colonial Costumes Make A Great Halloween Outfit

The Colonial Era was a fascinating time period for the United States. For many, times were tough. The first people to come to the Americas dealt with hardship as they tried to survive in a land they were not familiar. Once the Revolutionary War broke out, towns and cities were better established and the colonists eventually won their independence from England.

Why Colonial Costumes?

Certain areas of the country require the use of colonial costumes. At Jamestown in Virginia, people dress up in tradition colonial outfits and give visitors an authentic colonial experience by reenacting life during that time. In other parts of country, such as at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts, the start of the Revolutionary War is reenacted each year. Those mock battles also require traditional clothing and colonial costumes.

Not Just for History

However, wearing colonial costumes doesnít need to be restricted to historical reenactments. You can easily dress up in a colonial outfit for other events such as for Halloween and costume parties. They arenít spooky but for certain costume parties, they are applicable. For example, some towns on the east coast host colonial themed costume parties where all the people must dress in period clothing. Traditional foods are served and music from the Colonial Era is the main source of entertainment.

Where to Find Colonial Costumes

There are a few ways you can end up with a colonial costume. First, check your local costume shops. If you live in one of the thirteen original colonies, chances are you should be able to find traditional colonial costumes. Also, check with local theater groups and your local library. Again, this is only a good suggestion if you live in an area that has a higher demand for colonial costumes.

Another option is to purchase the costume from a specialty shop. You can either buy the colonial costumes online, from a catalog, or from a store. You also may be able to rent. Also keep in mind that making your own costume from a pattern you either buy or create yourself is another option. If you do decide to make it yourself, you may want to research and see what traditional fabrics and colors were used. Then again, you may want to modify the costume a bit to suit your own purposes.
