It is undoubtedly true that Filipinos were given the gift of song as evidenced by the many original pinoy music we have (OPM music) which is brought to us for our auditory pleasure by various Philippine Radio Stations. Fact is, Filipinos are rather fond of singing, as many might have noticed during gatherings and fiestas where the karaoke (or videoke machine if you may) is always an invited special guest second only to the lechon. So with this comes along a set of songs which have become a regular staple at every occasion. But while western songs have increasingly made their influence known by being present in songbooks, it is also glaringly obvious that each songbook dedicates page after page to OPM artists with their respective songs. And though preferences and tastes may vary, these are the songs the writer believes should be in everyone’s queue of songs whenever they are on a karaoke venture.
5. ) Kung ako nalang sana- Khalil Ramos/Sarah Geronimo/ Bituin Escalante
Here’s a popular and indispensable song option for the perpetually friendzoned and to those who just got spurned and rejected by their object of affections only to see them get hurt by their respective partners. Straight to the point, yet heart wrenching to the very core, this is one song choice that makes any singer belt out not only his/her voice but his/her feelings as well.
Powerful “Hugot” Line: “Kung ako nalang sana ang iyong minahal, di ka na muling mag-iisa”
4. ) Harana- Parokya ni Edgar
A song that exemplifies Filipino tradition for wooing their women should make it into everyone’s song queue. This song is not only melodic and catchy but it will tell those within earshot a brief background of how Filipino courtship used to happen back then. In a fast paced world where courtship is virtually nonexistent, it is rather nice to be reminded of how our forefathers pursued their women before.
Powerful “Hugot” Line: “Ibubuhos ko ang buong puso ko sa isang munting harana para sayo”
3. ) Evidence- Urbandub
Embittered, betrayed and scorned lovers regard this as a go to song. The lyrics already speak volumes about the story behind this song but the accompanying video is even more telling (which I would not spoil as its description surpasses words). For those who have literally caught their lovers in the arms of another, this soft tuned yet powerful song is a necessity in your song queue.
Powerful “Hugot” Line: “Caught you in the arms of another. I’ve been dying everyday since then”
2. ) Kisapmata- Rivermaya/ Bamboo
Literally translating to “blink of an eye” here’s another song option that is a wonderful addition to your queue of songs. Released in 1996, this OPM favorite made it to the hearts of Filipinos and into their song playlists as well. Upbeat and easy to memorize lyrics, this song is undoubtedly timeless.
Powerful “Hugot” Line: “Kani-Kanina lang. Pagka ganda-ganda ng pagkasabi mong sanay tayo na nga. Kani-kanina lang pagka saya-saya ng buhay kong bigla na lang nag-iba”
1. ) Ang Huling El Bimbo- Eraserheads
A classic and one that should be present at every song playlist and queue at all cost. Composed by Ely Buendia and popularized by Eraserheads in the year 1996. This song is a fan favorite than spans across time and remains to be one of the most sung OPM songs in karaoke houses. The song itself is a wonderful piece of art as its lyrics offer you a rendition of a boy’s unrequited love for a girl who met an untimely tragic end.
Powerful “Hugot” Line: “Tinuruan mo ang puso ko na umibig ng tunay”
