Cake decorating is a wonderful hobby and it is also a special way to be able to express your creativity. It is a fun and rewarding experience and should feel good enough about it, you can even turn cake decorating into a full time profession.

The hobby of cake decorating does require a certain measure of artistic skill, however with guidance and tutoring, in along with new and fresh ideas, anyone would be able to master the art of cake making and decoration. As an art form, cake decorating will allow you to expand your skills and imaginations to limits only your mind can restrict. By indulging yourself in the hobby you will be able to make yourself and the recipient proud of your work.

Working with the art of cake decorating is rewarding to both the client or recipient and the decorator of the cake. There may however be a level of stress especially when you are working on a deadline but the end result in most cases is worth the trouble. When you do take your time and do your cake decorating in peace, you are likely to find the entire process very enjoyable and at the same time relaxing. One of the ways to reduce stress in any situation, is to keep your mind focused on the design itself, and not allow negative thoughts to get in the way of your creativity and your passion.

Getting Ideas

As you start cake decorating, start off with easy and simple decorations and designs. You perhaps start with cupcakes and cookies. You may even use stencils and edible marker kits. Using a stencil allows you to be able to dust your cupcakes with powdered sugar or cocoa powder over the top of the cake and make a wonderful, yet simple or even elegant design.

For your cake decorating project you can also use royal icing, butter cream or fondant. Start by topping the cakes with icing and putting on fruit, icing flowers, and even candy. Other things you can do may include making the cakes look like other foods. Hamburgers, pizzas, hotdogs and also cakes that look like fruit of flowers. This can be done by using molded cake pans or by cutting the cake into smaller pieces and piecing them together. You may also create different characters when decorating, just ensure that when you care cake decorating to use cake that is moist and not crumble so that it will stay together better and will not fall apart when it is cut.

You will have to eliminate the crumbs on the icing of the cake, and create a nice smooth finish to create a wonderful looking cake decorating project. To be able to fine finish the icing on the cake is considered to be one of the most important segments of cake decorating and this skill should be worked on and fined tuned as your skills continue to develop.

By using fondant icing, this will add and air of elegance to your cake decoration project. Fondant can quite easily be rolled out and draped over the cake with care. It may also be modeled into different characters and shapes that you can imagine. Fondant is normally available in vanilla and chocolate, and the white one can easily be colored. While fondant may be quite difficult to work with, it is also very beautiful when the finished cake decorating product is unveiled.


When engaging in the hobby of cake decorating, you should learn the basic skills and then pick up on other tips to apply to your knowledge as you go along. The internet is a very useful resource in addition to the use of books to learn many tips and tricks which will further enhance your skills. You have the means to turn any topic or niche into a cake decoration and only your imagination will limit you.
