You need to select a specific type of model train to build. There are many different options for track layouts, so you need to carefully decide on an appropriate layout for yourself. Whatever your personal preference, decide in advance and devise a plan prior to shopping. A challenging and fun project with your model train sets is to design and follow a theme. Recreate a time period like the gold-mining era of the 1800s with the train running through the town. Or perhaps you prefer the English countryside of the 1950s with the train winding around the rolling hills and farmland. Maybe even a modern train traveling through New York City.
