The right thank you note wording is essential to showing gratitude on paper. Most of us are left wondering - what are the right words for thank you notes to use?

This can be hard to know. For all that we're taught about grammar and literature in high school English class, very few of us are taught much usefulness in the way of writing. For instance, how to send the right kinds of thank you letters!

Here are some hints to help out, some blunders to avoid, and some free thank you letter samples you are free to use, if you like.

If ‘Dear [Person], ’ sounds either too formal or too romantic to you, saying ‘Hi [Person]’ should be just fine.

Mention what the person did or gave to you that helped you out. Then, mention something about that item or act of generosity. How the act helped you, how great it was, what it says about the person, for an act of kindness. What you intended to do with the item, or how unique it is, or how high-quality the item is.

How do you close a letter without being too personal, too sappy, or too superficial? Try these closings for your thank you note wording - your words for thank you notes:

  • Yours
  • Cordially
  • Sincerely
  • Regards
  • Warm Regards
Here is some sample thank you note wording to show you how:
  • 'Hi Preston! I just wanted to say thanks for picking me up from the airport the other day. I know you had plenty to do that afternoon, but you still cared enough to help me out. You're a great friend. Thanks! Sincerely,
    Jim'
Here are some more thoughtful words for a thank you note:
  • 'Dear Suzanne, Thank you so much for giving me your old baby crib. The dark finish makes it go perfectly with the room, and we can spend the money we saved, on a stroller and car seat! The crib is beautiful, and having it really helps us out financially. Thank you so much! Cousins and Friends Forever,
    Amanda'
Finally, here is an example of the right thank you words when you've been in the hospital:
  • 'Hi Bob, The flowers you sent while I was in the hospital really helped brighten my stay - you know how cold and sterile it can be in those rooms! I really appreciate you taking the time to send them. When I'm feeling a little better, you and Louise will have to come visit us for dinner! Sincerely,
    Anne'
So there you have it. Figuring out the right words for thank you notes can seem a little intimidating at first. But now that you know how to open, compose, and close your notes - and have a few samples to go by - your thank you note wording should be a snap!
