Flowers and Mother's Day

Visitors: 250

There is one special Sunday in May when everyone on the planet is encouraged to honor one of the most important women in their lives – their mothers. On this day there are some traditional customs that most of us follow. We make breakfast for our mothers, we present them with touching greeting cards and we give them flowers. Beautiful flowers and Mother’s Day just seem to go hand-in-hand.

The trouble with this is that flower retailers recognize the mad rush for flowers on Mother’s Day and can charge a premium price. Although most of us are willing to pay a bundle to ensure our mother has a lovely flower bouquet, there are ways to help ensure the flowers arrive on time and don’t cost more than they need to.

If you know that you will be giving your mother flowers on Mother’s Day, order in advance. Many people wait until the day before this special day to arrange for delivery of a bouquet. Many florists will charge an extra fee for any order that comes in within 48 hours of Mother’s Day. For this reason try to call or visit the florist, if local, at least a week before the day you want them delivered.

An alternative to freshly cut flowers that many people are turning to are potted flowering plants; these have an advantage. When you give flowers on Mother’s Day there is a sad guarantee that within a week or so those flowers will have lost their luster and will need to be sent to the trash. With a potted plant, it can last for many months or years with the proper care and each time your mother glances at it she will be reminded of your thoughtfulness on her special day.

One lovely tradition that many people enjoy on Mother’s Day involves yet another type of flower. Many people plant perennials in their flower gardens and doing this with your mother on Mother’s Day is a wonderful idea. This allows you to not only give her the flowers, but help her plant them as well. Mothers love spending time with their children and this allows them to have that.

Also as the summer moves forward, she can pick the flowers from time-to-time and place them in a vase inside. This makes the gift even more thoughtful and long lasting.

Although there are many ways to present your mother with flowers on this Sunday in May, never forget the true meaning of the day. You should celebrate how fortunate you are to have such a remarkable woman as a mother. There isn’t a flower in existence that can express that sufficiently.
