The holiday season is knocking at the door. Before you know it, you’ll be putting up the new calendar. Stress, stress, and more stress? Not if you make it a habit to do a few simple things.
I close my weekly ezine with this quote -
In my youth, I stressed freedom, and in my old age I stress order. I have made the great discovery that liberty is a product of order. -Will Durant
You may ask yourself just what this means. It's simple really. If you get things done, you have more time to do what you want to do.
This time of year, you give and give and give - your time, your energy, your money - until everything is dried up, including your spirit. Is it any wonder that the holiday season seems like drudgery?
So how do you get to the point where you can control the chaos and still have time to enjoy life? Self Discipline.
I know, it sounds like a jail sentence, but really it's not. You see, it's taking care of the little things before they add up to big things.
For example - if you clean up the kitchen right away after you eat, the food won't be all dried and caked up on the dishes or the stove. It's easy to clean. If you wait, it's a pain in the neck.
If you take a few seconds and squeegee your shower walls when you're done in the shower, you'll hardly ever have to clean it.
Often, I’m out at eleven p. m. shoveling snow. It's easier to take 15 or 20 minutes and get it done while it's still soft. Plus, it's usually a little warmer. If you wait, it's really cold and the snow is frozen and heavy.
It's all the little things that people let slip. Self Discipline simply requires that you take care of things now, while they're still little and easy. Quit ignoring things and take care of them right away. You’ll be amazed at how much easier life will be.
Discipline yourself to “do it now" and you'll have more time and less stress.
Here's my prescription for enjoying the holidays –

Start buying Christmas gifts now. There’s really not that much time left.
When you’re sitting watching TV, do a few Christmas cards every night. They will be done and ready to mail, without any stress.
Clean the kitchen up every night.
Squeegee the shower walls every day. Takes seconds.
Wipe down the bathroom fixtures, mirrors and counters once a day. Keep a bottle of glass cleaner and a roll of paper towels handy in the bathroom. It only takes a couple of minutes, and you'll be amazed at how clean your bathroom stays.
Do one other little bit of housework every night - like dust a room. If you use the plan in Secret Confessions of A Clean Freak, you already have this one down, right?
Eat healthy and get enough rest. If you’re really not sure about what the best foods are to keep you healthy, and your energy levels up – Read Suicide by Diet.
Go have fun!
It really is that simple. It's all about taking care of the little things.
