It is a known fact that drains are an important part of any plumbing system. Flushed waste and wastewater go through these drainpipes and empty into a septic system or the sewer. With all that passes through drains it is evitable that at one point it is going to clog up with food particles, grease, waste materials, and hair. One of the best ways to keep drains clean is to use a homemade drain cleaning solution of vinegar and baking soda each month. When you have a clogged drain use a plunger to unstop them or if it is a serious clog use a plumbing snake instead of using toxic chemical drain cleaners.
Every month use this homemade drain cleaning solution in all your sinks. For this mixture you need to pour directly in the drain a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar that is hot and three to four quarts of extremely hot water. This will cause a non-toxic chemical reaction that will push any sediment down the drain. Using baking soda can reduce any odors from the drains. The acidic properties found in vinegar get rid of some of the hazardous pathogens in the drain and pipes.
When you have a clogged drain, using your typical plunger will normally get rid of it. All you need to do is place the plunger over the hole and vigorously pump several times to loosen the clog. Make sure that you have good suction or it will not work as well. You should also fill the sink with enough water to cover the bottom of the plunger to allow for great suction.
If this does not work, you may need to use a plumber’s snake. You can find this tool in most large department stores, hardware stores, and home improvement stores. A steel cable is wrapped around a crank you turn by hand and is flexible and long. Before you use it the drain trap that is normally located in the cabinet under your sink must be taken off. You will probably need to use a wrench to do this. Once this is done insert the snake into the drainpipe that leads to your sewer system. As you are inserting it into the drainpipe, you need to spin clockwise. By doing this the narrow coils on the cable will grasp debris and hair as it turns inside the drainpipe.
For drain cleaning you should only use the toxic drain cleaners as the last choice. The caustic chemicals could splash on you and burn your skin. They could cause a disruption with the regular bacteria decomposition in your septic system and corrode the pipes. For extremely stubborn clogs, call a residential plumbing company.
