The short answer is almost everyone will benefit from a home water filtration system. This article will highlight the major contaminants in our home water supplies, why they are there, (some of them are required by law!), their harmful effects and the best, most economical way to remove them with water purifiers.
First, let's look at chlorine.
In the late 1800's the world was grappling with two water-borne killers: typhoid fever and cholera.
The death rate for untreated typhoid fever was from 50 percent to as high as 90 percent.
Cholera, in its most severe forms, is one of the fastest killing illnesses known. Often, healthy people, if untreated, die within two to three hours of showing the first symptoms and the average person dies within 18 to 24 hours.
Can you imagine how excited people must have been to learn of the miracle of chlorine?
By adding bleach, a simple, inexpensive poison to the drinking water they slammed the door on these hated water-borne plagues.
By 1904 chlorine was the standard in water treatment for the U. S. as it continues to be today.
Today's laws even require a residual effect with chlorine. This means that enough chlorine must be added to our water by our water utilities to ensure there will be sufficient chlorine available to destroy living organisms in every drop of water that comes from our taps.
What has been the long-term result of chlorine in our water supplies?
1. The two plagues, cholera and typhoid fever, were destroyed but two more plagues, cancer and heart disease, were created. These newest epidemics started shortly after we first introduced bleach into the water we drink, bathe in, and cook with.
2. Prior to adding bleach to our water, about one person in 50 developed cancer. Today it's one in three! If you are an adult male, it's one in two!
3. We now know that people who drink chlorinated water have a 93 percent greater chance of developing cancer than people who drink good, safe water from a water filtration system.
4. Before adding bleach to our water, heart disease was almost unknown. Today 1 person in 2.6 develops cardiovascular disease! If you are an adult female, it's one in two!
Okay, as simply as possible, how does chlorinated water cause cancer and heart disease?
Chlorine in our water leads to the creation of ‘free radicals’ in our bodies. These are unstable molecules that will react quickly with other molecules to exchange an electron in order to regain their stability. When a stable molecule gives up an electron to a free radical it becomes a free radical itself and this starts a chain reaction.
If this new free radical is part of a cell, the chain reaction can change the cell's DNA, causing it to multiply wildly. That is when we develop a cancerous lump in the, breast, lung, prostate, etc.
What about heart disease?
White blood cells have the task of gathering up unattached debris, such as free radicals, lipids (fatty deposits), non-soluble minerals, etc. , from our blood and removing it from our systems. If attacked by a free radical, the damaged white blood cells often attach themselves to the wall of a blood vessel (no one yet knows why).
While attached there, they continue to gather up lipids and non-soluble minerals such as calcium that has become toxic and non-soluble in water, thanks to reactions with chlorine.
This non-soluble calcium, along with the lipids, becomes the plaque that builds up in your veins and arteries and leads to heart attacks, cardiovascular disease, strokes, gallstones, arthritis, kidney stones and host of other problems.
Unfortunately, chlorine is not the only contaminant in our water. Well over 2,000 of some 80,000 synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) have also been identified in water systems around the U. S. , in agricultural areas, industrial areas as well as rural areas.
These SOCs are products that make our daily lives better, but we have learned that anything we use in our society on a day-to-day basis will eventually end up in our water supply. So, yes, we have dirty SOCs in our water but there is more. . .
We are a society awash in drugs; legal and otherwise. We buy them and then we flush them, unused or not metabolized and, again some of it ends up in our water supply.
We now know that drugs of all kinds, including antibiotics and sex hormones are flowing in our rivers, streams, ground water and, consequently, in the water coming into our homes.
Our water utilities test for less than 100 of these contaminants and they don't filter out any of them because most use sand for their water filtration media to remove large particles and sand is not capable of removing these chemicals.
Virtually every water system delivers some of the contaminants we have mentioned to our homes but, so far, thank goodness, they have only been found in very low levels.
But many of these chemicals are carcinogens (i. e. they are known to cause or promote cancer) and we now know that when two or more of these low level carcinogens combine the new compound's cancerous effects can be made 1,000 times worse, or more!
The fact is we really don't know the long-term effects of these chemicals on the body, even in low levels.
We have seen that cancer and heart disease are man-made diseases that appeared not long after the introduction of chlorine into our drinking water supplies.
Since these diseases are man-made, I believe we can, for the most part, prevent them with today's water filtration technology that will turn our tap water into good, safe water.
The important thing to learn is simply which home water filtration systems do the best, most efficient and most economical job of filtering out contaminants without removing the healthful minerals.
