Chicken Coop Kits or Build Your Own Hen House?

What is the advantage of buying a chicken coop kit as opposed to building your own? How long to assemble? Chicken coops or hen houses as some describe them have become de rigeur in the last few years with not just country folk but city folk too deciding they like the idea of keeping their own laying hens.

The benefits of a good source of healthy, clean food and the family pet aspect of keeping your own chickens has seen an explosion in people taking on to keep hens and chickens. A cheap way to get started it to build your own chicken coop but you might also take the slightly easier option of a chicken coop kit.

A chicken coop kit is aimed at those people who are not prepared to spend the time building a chicken coop from scratch.

And there can be many perfectly valid reasons for this. For example you may not have the time or the woodwork or diy skills to build your own coop.

So what do you get with a chicken coop kit? Basically you can have the kit delivered to your property in ready to assemble panels which only require screwing together with a screw gun.

So for even the most challenged people when it comes to woodworking or DIY, a couple of hours and the assistance of a friend could leave you with a new coop. And you will only need a measuring tape, a screw gun or driver and a tin snips.

The size of you coop will obviously vary from supplier to supplier but a 4X6 is pretty standard and this will house 12-15 birds comfortably. Most companies will also supply a smaller version suitable for 6-8 chickens.

There should be no sawing or drilling required as the bulk of the coop should be pre-assembled and your job is just to measure and screw together the predrilled panels.

In summary a chicken coop kit has a lot of attractions for many people. . and will allow you try out the whole idea of rearing chickens in a relatively small scale way.

But if you really want to build a chicken coop in the most cost effective way then building it yourself is the way to go and considerably cheaper than the kit.
