Home Extensions by a London Basement Company

With house prices continuously increasing within the capital, moving into a property which offers more space is becoming less and less of a probability for many families. Instead, if space permits it (and planning permission is granted) extensions – both single and multi-storey – are becoming ever popular. Unfortunately, in many areas of London, such as Chelsea and Kensington, where the average house price is getting on for £1million and space is at a premium, extending outwards isn’t always a viable option and this is leaving many families struggling for space. A solution to this however, is using a London basement company to create a basement that you can use for any purpose.

Understandably you may be under the impression that a basement can only be created if there’s already an existing space from a previous basement; but this isn’t strictly true. Although there’s no denying that it’s often easier and in some cases cheaper to waterproof an existing basement, before making use of the space it provides, there is no reason why you cannot use the space under your property to create an extension for your property.

Before any building work can begin though, it is important that you design the area – do you want it the full length of your property or only partially? After the designs have been drawn up, you’ve had them approved and you’re confident that the area will be able to withstand the pressure you’ll be exerting on it, the excavation work can start.

Once the area has been excavated, levelled and prepared, the construction work can begin. Many basement companies will provide a level of damp proof treatment during this stage, to ensure that the foundations don’t suck up the moisture from the ground. A second course of damp proofing may also be provided later on in the build.

As part of the construction phase, not only do the construction team provide a waterproofed shell for you to decorate as you wish, but they’ll also include doorframes, windows and stairways, meaning that access to and from the basement is easy and you don’t have to rely on artificial light in the room.
It is worth remembering though that creating a new basement isn’t a quick job. On average it takes 26 weeks from the designing stage through to having the completed article.

During this time period however, all relevant checks will be carried out by the appropriate bodies. However, having a London basement company carry out the build on your behalf will guarantee that you’re left with a stunning space which can be used for whatever you require. So if you require extra space for your property why not give you local basement company a call.
