Avoid Platform Bed Plans Designed by Woodworkers

Visitors: 2,729

Platform beds are having a comeback of sorts with both bedroom furniture shoppers and furniture builders. Perhaps some are attracted to the low cost, especially after seeing more conventional bed frames sell for thousands of dollars. Most are intrigued with the the idea of building the project themselves, after reading how simple the construction can be. And that's where many plans designed by woodworkers lead them astray.

In its most simple form, a platform bed consists of little more than a basic wood frame with four corner posts to hold everything together. The basic design uses a solid sheet of plywood to support the mattress. This makes for a sturdy, but somewhat flexible, cushion. You'll find plenty of variations to this design, especially if you want something a little more stylish - like a headboard, footboard, canopy, storage drawers, etc. However, these extras quickly transform the once easy DIY project into a full-scale woodworking production. In some ways this defeats the original purpose of the bed design.

As you shop around for platform bed plans, be sure to find out what type of joinery the plan uses. Some plan descriptions fail to mention just how complicated the joinery might be. This can make a big difference in whether you will be able to tackle the project or not. A few simple joinery techniques should not require specialized skills, and you can usually make the cuts with typical DIY power tools, like a cordless saw and jigsaw. Any platform bed plan that mentions things like dadoes, grooves, and mortises assumes you have some pretty sophisticated power tools in your shop. That means they're talking about table saws and dado blades, routers and router tables, drill presses and mortising machines.
