Green energy is the way of the future. It is becoming more and more apparent with skyrocketing gas and energy costs that we will need to leave our old ways behind and find new, renewable energy sources. It will take a shift in thinking and a change of behavior. It will also take more research into alternative energy sources so that they can become cost-effective enough to incorporate them into our fast-paced money-driven world.
And many people have responded. New science and engineering ideas are bringing us closer to a world driven on renewable energy than we ever have before. In fact, with plans that are correctly engineered, it is possible to build your own wind generators, that will sail in your backyard, to power your whole house.
These generators can be made for as little as $100
Surprisingly. With materials from a local hardware store and basic tools. You don't need to spend $2500 for a commercial one, that's for sure.
A simple formula that will allow you to estimate how much power a wind generator will make:
Power(Watts) = (Wind Speed)^3 * (Blade Diameter)^2 * 0.00478
The wind speed makes the most difference, but if you have a decent wind speed (say 10 mph) and a good blade diameter on your turbine (8 foot works well and the tower doesn't need to be too tall) then:
W = (10*10*10) * (8*8) * 0.00478
W = 305 watts/hour.
Multiply that by 24 hours and you get 7.32 kWh/day.
The average American home uses about 12-20 kWh/day, but with conservation you may use much lower - my house uses about 5 kWh/day. So a single windmill that might cost you as little as $100 could save you up to half of your electricity bill! This is very exciting. It is too bad that more people don't know about it yet. Lucky for you and everybody else that you know now, too!
