Are you starting to re-think your energy situation? You're not the only one. So many people are feeling the effects of the high energy costs. The upside to this is that it will direct us down the path of energy independence. However, the downside is that it means we are paying more and more for our heating and electricity needs.

Until things start to improve, what you one do? Before you begin generating your own power there are some important things you can do. One is to invest in energy efficient products. This step really should come before you investigate installing solar panels or cells, wind turbines or other alternative energy sources.

Increasing the energy efficiency of your home is one of the easiest and fastest ways that you can begin to save money on your energy costs. You can actually decrease your energy costs by 30% or more by investing a few hundred dollars in energy efficiency products. These include things such as insulation and weatherization supplies. Although windmills and solar cells are garnering all the attention lately, the tried and true solution of insulating, weatherizing and improving energy efficiency is the quickest and easiest method that will yield the greatest results.

One very easy and effective change you can make to decrease your electricity bill is to switch from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent ones. Replacing just a one fourth of your light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps can cut your lighting expenses in half! Not bad for such a small investment.

This example illustrates that you don't have to use expensive or difficult processes to save money on your energy costs. Further down the road you'll find that an added benefit of lowering your power requirements is that you'll be able to provide a larger portion of your electricity needs from alternative power sources. It actually is possible to someday generate all your power with wind generators and solar cells. Imagine the savings and the feeling of self-sufficiency to be the sole provider of your energy requirements!
