HVAC units are inside many homes to provide heating and cooling. An HVAC unit is designed to keep your home's temperature comfortable for you throughout the year. You will likely need to hire a professional to install it and maintain it. Continue reading for some helpful tips to use when it comes to HVAC.

If your HVAC doesn't seem to be working properly, check things out yourself prior to calling in a technician. Make a list of the temperatures in each room and whether they are hot or cold. That way, the contractor will have an easier time diagnosing the problem and repairing it fast.

Be sure to clean the fan blades and coils of the condenser fan. Turn the power off so nothing moves. Secondly, pop the grill off, take the blades off and clean them as well as the actual unit.
Cover your unit when you are mowing the lawn. Make sure you shoot the clippings in the other direction from the unit.

When blowing leaves, do the same. Always take care when passing your HVAC units while moving leaves, grass or other debris.

Lubricate your fan condenser at least once a year. These ports have a metal covering. Sometimes it is rubber. Buy an SAE 20 product that is lightweight, and then put no more than ten drops into the ports.

A good place to place your compressor unit outside is in a shady spot. The unit will operate more efficiently to cool your home if the intake air is cooler to begin with.

It is always a good idea to swap out single pane windows for double pane ones. Double-pane windows keep inside air cooler, allowing you to reduce AC usage in the summertime. This will also help you keep in heat when it gets cold.

One way to save some money with A/C is by having a programmable thermostat installed. These can save you around 10 percent on your heating and cooling costs by just turning it back 10 percent to 15 percent for around eight hours each day. Some of these thermostats can even be controlled from your smart phone or computer.

Never allow your home to get dangerously hot inside. Air conditioners are limited in that they can only reduce the indoor temperature 20 degrees Fahrenheit in a reasonable time limit. If the temperature in your home rises to 100 degrees F or higher, cooling it will only drop the temperature to 80 degrees F. Depending on the humidity level, this temperature isn't considered a safe sleeping temperature for the human body to be able to recover from the summer heat.

Do your homework on a number of HVAC companies before selecting the one that has the best reputation and service record. It can be helpful to check out the online reviews of previous customers and it is always wise to check their reputation as listed on a Better Business Bureau website. Doing these things beforehand will allow you to make a smart decision.

Air conditioners occasionally freeze up, literally. Many times people think there is a plumbing leak, but instead the drain line has water that is frozen. Switch the thermostat to the fan only. Talk to a professional if you are unsure of how to do this.

There are plenty of tips that will help when you find yourself dealing with a contractor. These tips are found in the article above, of course, but there are others as well. It is important that this piece of equipment is installed and maintained properly. Put this advice to good use and HVAC installation or maintenance will no longer be an issue.
