Home Water Purifiers and Filters

All home water purifiers and filters are not created equally. There are good products, better products and then there are the best. You cannot always judge by price or the popularity of the brand. Some of the better products are made by companies that do not advertise on TV.

Any good company should have a list of contaminants that their home water purifiers and filters will block out. Here we have information about possible contaminants. All of them have shown up at one time or another in tap water.

Each year, your water treatment facility releases a list of the composition of your tap water. In parts per billion, they are required to disclose which contaminants your drinking water contains. The problem is that you cannot always rely on them to be honest.

It was recently found that a number of local utilities are “fudging" the figures. Sometimes, they are not disclosing the information at all. The only way to truly know what is in your glass is by knowing what your home water purifiers and filters are removing. The answer should be that nothing is in your glass except pure pH and mineral balanced, chlorine-free water.

Over 2000 different chemicals have been found in unfiltered tap water. Most of them fall into several major categories. If the label on your home water purifiers and filters only says that it blocks chlorine, without going into any details about other chemicals and contaminants, then you should be concerned.

Let's just start with MTBE. It is a chemical used primarily to oxygenate and raise the octane output of gasoline. Leaks at gas stations and from their underground storage tanks have allowed this chemical to infiltrate the public water of a number of cities throughout the country.

We looked at the 10 most popular home water purifiers and filters and found that only two remove MTBE from the tap water. The EPA has concluded that MTBE could possibly cause cancer at high doses. MTBE negatively affects both the taste and smell of drinking water.

THMs are chemicals used as refrigerants and solvents. The EPA limits the total concentration of THMs in public drinking water to an amount that they “believe" to be safe for human consumption. But, as we mentioned above, released figures cannot always be trusted.

Only about half of the home water purifiers and filters on the market remove THMs. They are toxic and potentially cancer causing. There is a special risk to children, as constant long term exposure is believed to increase the risk.

The best multi-stage home water purifiers and filters block MTBE, THMs, chlorine, lead and many other contaminants. The cost of a new unit is very reasonable, particularly since your family's health is at stake.
