A water heater explosion is very dangerous that in addition to damages and injury it can cause even death. If the temperature of water is above 100°C (212°F), the water will be in liquid state inside the tank. But as when the water comes out of the tap, the pressure gets released resulting in water boil and can cause burns. If water with temperature above 88°C (190°F), pours on our skin, it will cause 3rd degree burns. T & P or TPR valves (temperature and pressure relief valves) are fitted on water taps, as a safety device, which will stop the water from coming out if the pressure or temperature is very high.
Tips to safeguard your water heater:
- insulate the water heater
- prefer showers over baths
- insulate the water pipes (both hot and cold) connected from your water heater up to a 6 feet length
- Every three months, drain a quarter of water from your tank so as to remove the efficiency reducing sediments
You may not realise the importance of water heater unless, one morning, when you wake up and go to take a shower and find no hot water.
When the cold water enters the heater, it settles at the bottom of the tank as the hot water is less dense. When you have consumed all the hot water up in the tank, the cold water will start to flow. If you get cold water from a heater, either the heater is too small for your house or else the bottom heating element of the heater might have been burned out.
