This is an interesting question, because it surely seems as if working form home has definitely become the new American dream, especially for those of us with kids. The idea of having other people watch our kids doesn't necessarily sit well with many people and working from home is a wonderful alternative. This way you can be home with the kids, so that someone else doesn't have to watch them. In my opinion, this a dream worth trying to realize.
In pursuit of this dream, there are some things to look out for, however. I talk to people everyday who claim to dream of working from home, but have no idea what that actually means. In most cases is means having your own business and working that business out of your home. This is very different than having a job where you get paid to perform a certain task. With your own business you do work without getting paid (at least initially). This is the biggest thing that people who say they want to work from home don't realize. There are no guarantees. You, as the business owner, have to go out and drum up business, and you don't get paid for doing so, at least not in the traditional sense. This isn't something that should discourage you; it's simply something that you should be aware of.
The bottom line is that working from home is the new American dream, and everyone should give it a shot. For me there are some wonderful advantages to working at home, the most important being the fact that I'm the one with my three year old. She's not at a day care, being tended to by someone else. She's with me and learning whatever she learns from her Dad. We should all be so lucky, and the beautiful thing is that we all can be, it may just take learning some new skills.
So if it's a dream of yours to work from home, follow your heart. Ask yourself this question: In your entire life, when you truly followed your heart, were you ever disappointed in the long run? I would say it's time fort you to start doing some research, so you can realize the new American dream.
