Start a Children's Party Entertainment Business

The children's party entertainment business does not need much money to start. All you need is a phone, a business address, which can be your home, and e-mail address for the clients to contact you. You can rent party equipment or build your own inventory. If you decide to do the latter, then you need to invest $ 2,500 to get your business going. With this money, you can buy a “moon bounce, " spin art, temporary tattoos, carnival games, cotton candy or snow cone machines and themed party decorations, etc.

You will also need a vehicle to run a children's party entertainment business. Ideally, you need a small trailer where you can store the units, and then take them to the party point. You'll also need a dolly, good extension cords, sandbags, cleaning solution and a broom. It's good business practice to clean up the party area before leaving. This will add to your costs, because you will need to employ extra help to carry out this work.

Since you will be dealing with lots of children, you must check your state laws, and take steps to cover yourself in case of an accident. You also need to buy insurance to cover unexpected emergencies and a part-time accountant to look at your accounts once a quarter.

Finding customers

This is never a problem in children's party entertainment business. There are always parties happening, be it birthday parties, post-prom parties, summer camps, school parties, corporate picnics and holiday parties.

Pick a name that's exciting and which will delight children. Also, decide what kind of children's party entertainment business you'd like to enter. Would you like to limit yourself to birthday parties or organize large events or both? It is always wise to start small, learn from the mistakes, and then move to the bigger stage.

Your earnings depend on how hard you work. You can easily charge $75 to $ 250 for a 4 to 8 hour day. If you are enterprising you can offer a combo deal of a bounce, fun food and games or spin art. Your effort should be to rent the bounce at least twice a week. Since less business happens on weekdays, you should offer lower rates for parties held from Monday to Thursday. During weekends and holidays, when the demand peaks, you must jack up prices.

This is a very important part of any children's party entertainment business. You need to organize some bright fliers in hot colors. These should be placed prominently in grocery stores, drug stores, gas stations, schools and entertainment centers. You should also get yourself listed in the yellow pages. The Internet, too, is not a bad idea. Attractive banner ads linked to your website can drive a lot of business. Once in a while you can also place ads in newspapers, especially during holiday time.

Finally, it's the word of mouth advertising that matters in this business. You can be sure to get orders from clients whose children were present in a party that you organized. You should also keep some extra business cards in your coat pocket. Dole them out liberally.

Problems you could face

Weather is your biggest enemy, especially for outdoor parties. Outside help for deliveries is another. The entire party may come unstuck if the deliveries arrive late. It's the same with equipment rentals. So make provision for such contingencies.

The low overheads make it possible to run the children's party entertainment business as a side venture. A beginner can easily keep his or her full-time job while running a party in the evening or on holidays.
