The Atkins diet is one of the most used weight loss methods today. One reason for this is that it is pretty simple to follow. The results are of course, just as satisfactory and do not really require a person to cook special foods or create their own food plan.

If you are currently on the scout for a good weight loss plan to take up and are considering the Atkins diet, then here are some pros and cons you might want to know.

Easy to Follow

It doesn’t take much to get on the Atkins diet. Compared to some diet methods like the Master Cleanse or the Cabbage Soup, the Atkins diet doesn’t really limit a person’s food choices. Granted, the one’s containing most carbohydrate is shunned, but a whole new set of food types are made available to a person.

Very Effective

It works, and not only does it start burning calories for you, it does so at a fast rate. During the first of four phases of the Atkins diet, a person experiences rapid weight loss which then slows down at the second phase.

It Can be Used for Long Periods

The great thing about this diet type is that you don’t have to switch to another method after a specific period of time. Notice that the Master Cleanse and the cabbage soup are only done within ten days and seven days respectively. After that, you will have to switch to another diet to maintain the weight you’ve lost. This is not the case with the Atkins diet. You can continue to comfortably use the diet even after weight loss is recognized since it doesn’t really jeopardize your health.

Focus on Protein

Regardless of how much carbohydrates may contribute to weight gain, the fact is that this nutrient is also used by the body for different purposes. Hence, you can only reduce intake but not totally remove it from your system. With the Atkins diet, the food content in focus is protein. You’ll find yourself eating more and more of this and overtime, it may not be a good thing. A surplus of protein in the body can possible cause various complication.

Very Expensive

There are actually food types today that are specially formulated for people who are on the Atkins diet. Energy bars or bread with low carbohydrates are offered up in stores especially for those who want to lose weight. However, some of these products can be a bit pricey and could definitely ruin your budget.

This is especially true if you don’t have the time to prepare food for yourself and is relying on easy-to-cook food for consumption. Since carbohydrates from processed food is the number one thing you’ll be getting rid of using the Atkins diet, then there isn’t really much choice when it comes to people living a fast paced lifestyle.

When thinking about taking up the Atkins diet, make sure that you ask your doctor first for possible complications. Wait for a go signal first before starting.
