Is it Better to Lose Weight Walking Or Running?

It is difficult to know whether it is better to loose weight walking or running. It might be counter-intuitive here - walking beats the heck out of running for weight loss! Besides the scientific explanation that I shall explain in a moment, as someone who went about losing weight on two separate occasions in the last few years, I can vouch for walking.

Seven years ago, I woke up one day to realize that I put on around 20 kg after working mindlessly in running my business for a decade. Imagine the shock when the scale told me that I was 89 kg. It took a few more weighing scales to convince me that they were right and I was wrong.

That made me decide to run the marathon again. Immediately I put a running plan together and started on my journey. Half a year later, I wish I could say I did it with a straight face - yeah almost that is - but I had to call it quits after 25 km. Not too bad you would say, won't you?

All in all, I lost about 5 kg after running for miles preparing for the marathon. Two years ago, I took the advice of brisk walking for weight loss. Almost everyday, it took me quite a bit of effort to get out from my work to take a 30 to 60 minute walk. One thing I enjoy, I must say, is that I can listen to all those audios that are piling up while while enjoying my walk.

For about 6 months, I lost about 8 kg. Why walking beats running for weight loss? This is what I found in countless books and journals for weight loss. Without all the scientific details, here's what it's all about. Brisk walking brings your heart rate to slightly higher than your normal and as a result, burns your fat.

On the other hand, though running definitely burns more calories than walking, it really burns the wrong type of calories - carbohydrates instead of fats.
