As we all know, trying to lose weight can be (to put it mildly) somewhat less than fun. There are so many rules to follow and so many exercises to find time for, while, at the same time, we have to cross some of our favorite foods off our list of “things to eat regularly. "

So what are some foods can we eat while we're trying to lose weight? And what are the best foods to eat to lose weight?

The answer: negative calorie foods.

If you've never heard of a “negative calorie food, " don't be concerned; technically, no foods can truly have a negative calorie count, because a calorie is a unit of energy, and there's no such thing as a negative unit of energy.

However, the digestion of some foods requires your body to use more calories (energy) than they contain, which results in a net loss of calories. If, for example, a particular food contains 10 calories, and your body has to use 15 calories to digest that food and shuttle it through your system, the overall effect is that you're down by 5 calories. Those are the best kinds of foods to eat to lose weight.

  • In most cases, the net loss of calories you'll experience by eating these foods is negligible. In other words, the number of calories that these foods will “burn" is so small, it's not possible to get skinny simply by gorging yourself on them.

    The idea is not to use these foods to burn calories for you, but to use them as replacements for some on the high-calorie, less healthy foods you're eating now. If you'll replace mashed potatoes with cauliflower prepared to taste like mashed potatoes, for example, you can save the calories you would have otherwise been eating.

    Although choosing these “foods to eat to lose weight" over less healthy options is a good idea, making better choices is not the entire equation. There are other factors that play a major role in determining your weight (and general health!) that you may not even be aware of.
